Long-Range planning does not deal with future decisions, but with the future of present decisions.

Need Help Establishing A Direction Or Putting Things Into Motion?

Here's some information that may get you started on the right track.

  • Your challenges and opportunities are like a pitcher filled with water. A mission statement helps to determine what percentage of the water will form your strategic plan.
  • Your plan is like the cup filled from the pitcher. There will never be enough room in the cup for all the water in the pitcher.
  • Your first decision should be how full to fill the cup. Focus is lost if you worry about spilling. Remember, even the most efficient factory is not set up to run at 100% capacity, 100% of the time. Leave a little room in your cup so you can be flexible when it comes to dealing with unforeseen challenges and opportunities.
  • Your next decision should be what water stays in the cup no matter what, and what water are you willing to pour into another cup if you decide to tackle something new. Note, water poured into another cup is like moving actions from one year to another. You may also decide to pour the water back into the pitcher. If you do, forget about it until it's time to update your plan, and refill your cup(s).
